Specs: Custom Made FWD ( Front Wheel Drive ) recumbent tadpole tricycle. Frame is aluminum 6061 professionally welded with other steel and aluminum components. Prototype limitations: A one off custom made internally mounted differential with a threaded end for a brand specific freewheel ( Sachs model Made in France stamped "95" 7 speed 13-28) and drives two stainless steel half shafts with custom made stainless steel inboard "CV" joints with modified LoveJoy outboard Ujoints with boots. The freewheel NOS was mounted in 2011 and has very low miles.
The rear aluminum frame section is attached to the front "power block" with three 8mm bolts and positioning shims. For small cars the frame is unbolted to ease transporting. With larger vehicles there won't be any need to separate. The rear wheel hub spacing is milled for a front wheel hub width. The rear wheel has a Phil Wood sealed bearing hub 36 hole with 451 Sun 36 hole rims. The rear dropouts are bolted onto the rear frame using 6mm bolts and are lock tighted into stainless threaded inserts. There are some holes and threaded holes in the dropout pieces to assist in placing a rack or accessory. Prototype/ disclaimer limitations: The rear spacing will accept a 451 sized 1, 1.125 or 1.375 tire widths only and will not fit a rear rotor/disc hub.
Crank is a SRAM Rival compact 50-34t 170mm length with entry level Wellgo platform pedal with mountain SPD clip on the other side. The bottom bracket is standard threading and is a SRAM GXP. Derailleurs are Shimano Ultegra ( front and rear) with vintage Suntour non indexing bar end shifters. Gear inches are 76 to 24. Prototype/ disclaimer limitations: The Outside chainring has spacers to help position the chainline. The chainline spacing is very tight so there is no cross chaining. You will have to adjust the front derailleur to reduce chain noise and rubbing in some gear combinations. The rear derailleur spacing was fitted for a old vintage derailleur and the newer Shimano is larger so spacing is tight. This frame design will NOT take a long cage/ triple crank!
Steering has been modified and lightened with the removal of the heavy joystick mechanism to a direct steer configuration using aftermarket direct steer handles. The two tierods attach to a center pivot piece. The outboard bearing mounts are using the new DBT4 style welded units with the direct handles mounted to these. New aluminum steerer tubes replaced the heavy steel ones and are internally bolted to the bearing mounts. Current headsets are the original Stronglight tapered bearing 1 inch threaded type.
The seat is a original Power On Cycling bike shop designed and created carbon fiber hardshell drilled to accept the seat brackets that mount on the frame. Prototype/ disclaimer limitations: This was a custom designed trike and fitted for myself. My X seam is approx 42" The seat mounts has a small adjustment front and back. The rear seat clamp is the new DBT4 style clamp with spacer shims. The long post on the rear seat bracket can be used to mount a flashy light. The prototype seat mount has no pivot for adjusting seat angle. The seat is very comfortable and is molded so you don't really need a neck rest. I rode this seat for 2 years of trike testing with out a neck rest. Look at the early ride videos! The seat has been reinforced and re-painted with epoxy and black dye. My weight is 220 pounds. I believe the seat was rated for 250 lbs.
Brakes are brand new Avid BB7 with brand new rotors and not bedded in yet per Avid specs. The brakes are controlled by a single lever with dual cables and adjusted for even braking. Front wheels are 36 hole Bitek hubs with Sun 451 sized rims. Custom fitted DBT4 hub adapters are machined to fit where the hub bearing inserts and machined to take the front axle drive pin and brake rotor. Spacing is very close.
Suspension has very small travel and was solely designed to smooth out minor bumps and street vibrations. The green elasotomers are ICE models and the green is the hard firmness color. These and the other yellow (soft) and red (standard) elastomers can be ordered off Utah Trikes or Hostel Shoppe or ICE websites. Custom made elastomer units were made to replace the finicky and expensive air shocks. Prototype/ disclaimer limitations: NOT intended or designed for off road use!
The assembly videos available on my youtube channel go in depth on the mechanicals of the FWD trike. The videos were filmed with the original red prototype and steel frame and joystick steering, but the drive line is the same. Newer videos with the DBT4 Blue Trike also show the drive line assembly and mechanicals.
The trike comes with two bottle mounts and mirror as shown. I will send three brand new primo comets 451 x 1.125" tires as the tires mounted have some wear. I will also send the freewheel removal tool that has been bored to fit over the CV unit.
